Cloud IIoT platform for operational efficiency at facilities

EKF Connect Industry is an industrial IoT platform that we built for EKF, an electronic supplies manufacturer in EMEA.

EKF tested the platform on their own facility and went on to offer it to other enterprises.

Business goal

Developing a more flexible alternative to SCADA

EKF prioritizes ESG practices: lean production, carbon footprint reduction, and workplace health and safety. To track these indicators better, they realized that their facilities needed a more agile version of SCADA.
The new platform had to provide remote monitoring and control of equipment, data analysis tools, and a low entry threshold so that an in-house operator could handle it without in-depth training.

Our solution

Cloud platform with custom scripts and mobile app

“SCADA systems lack flexibility, can’t use AI or analyze the received data. That’s why we decided to develop our own cloud system that will operate on larger datasets and build predictive models for better equipment control.”

Here’s how the platform works

Receiving data from local and remote devices

EKF bespoke gateway receives data via the Modbus protocol and transmits via MQTT. We added MQTT support so that our system could receive data from the gateway and connect Modbus devices to the cloud.
The OPC UA protocol ensures two-way data exchange with remote devices. We added a client so that our system could connect to OPC UA servers and work with equipment of different vendors, preserving the nesting hierarchy.

Digital Twins for predictive maintenance

An operator can create data hierarchy and display arrays of dynamic data from hundreds of equipment parameters. It allows them to create a digital twin of a remote object at the facility to better simulate and monitor its functions.

Development environment to write custom scripts and calculations

The environment is based on Python, one of the easiest and most convenient languages for data analysis.
Each script runs in a separate container. It helps to have full control over the resources it consumes and isolate the script from the rest of the system for better security.

Data customization for easier readability

We created editable dashboards with a library of customizable widgets.
Operators can choose the types and sizes of tables and charts, customize toggles and buttons, display data in tables and view version history.

User groups and access levels for better security

We developed a user group builder where the operator can customize permissions.
For example, a system integrator supplies ventilation to restaurants and customizes access so that the end user, the client, sees only the part of the interface necessary for their work.

Microservice backend to scale and withstand high loads

Android and iOS apps for 24/7 monitoring

The mobile app helps stay in touch when an operator is moving between facilities, a duty officer takes a leave from their post, or if an object requires 24/7 monitoring.

Results

Our client implemented the platform at their production plant. With it, they grew the volume and range of products, increased equipment utilization by 15-20%, and reduced energy costs by 10-15% in the first year, with subsequent annual reductions of 3-5%.
EKF continues to implement the platform on their other facilities and offers it to other organisations.
