Shape

MVP Development of an AR Furniture Shopping App

Shape is a furniture store mobile app with augmented reality try-ons. It allows users to view furniture in their interiors, and buy select items.

Augmented reality for next-level furniture shopping

Shape is a furniture startup that wanted to enter the home improvement market by launching online sales. Understanding that shoppers would hesitate to buy furniture without seeing and feeling it first, the founders decided to create a mobile app with augmented reality try-ons. In 2018, using AR in m-commerce was quite a revolutionary idea, and the Shape team turned to HeyInnovations to turn it into reality.

We had to develop an MVP version of the iOS app that our client would later test at international furniture trade shows to see whether their idea of selling furniture online can ever take off.

Business challenge

Creating an MVP version is a good option for companies to release new features quickly and within budget, or test novel business hypotheses as fast as possible.

When we are approached with the task to create an MVP, we always start by carrying out a thorough research to see what goals or hypotheses our client has. We interview our client, study their business processes and user portraits. Then, we propose a product vision—a small prototype or set of core features that we think will be necessary for the given project. The main task here is to correctly determine the basic underlying functionality that would convey the value of the whole product.

In the case of Shape, our client wanted to test the capabilities of AR for an m-commerce app, and the core feature here was the virtual try-on function that we had to develop.

How we tackled the tasks

UX/UI

Made a simple user flow to achieve maximum customer satisfaction

In 2018, when Shape approached us with the idea of developing an AR app, this technology was not so widespread, and users were not fully accustomed to it yet. So we had to take that into account and develop an MVP that would feature a simple and sleek interface with a clear user onboarding flow.

Search

Created a clear furniture catalog to ensure easy search and navigation

We organized all the furniture into convenient catalog sections. Users can filter items by furniture name, or room type. Organizing items by rooms helps users quickly access and try on all the necessary furniture and get inspiration on extra pieces that they can add to their interior.

Convenient try-ons

Users can try the furniture on both from the catalog and individual product cards. Users can combine and compare the items from the catalog to choose the best piece and shop whole sets.

Added realistic visualization to help users be 100% sure about their purchase

Our main task and challenge with this project was creating an AR fitting process that would instill just as much confidence as shopping in a physical store.

Useful content

Built a recommendations feed to add extra value and promote new purchases

To provide for a high user retention and drive more engagement early on, we added a complementary service right into the MVP version. The recommendations feed features useful articles on how to pick furniture and decorate different types of rooms with the items from the Shape app catalog.

Outcomes

We implemented all the features that our client wanted for the MVP version of the app and handed the project over on schedule. The client went on to present the Shape app at furniture trade shows, where it achieved 76% positive user feedback.
